To my surprise I received over one hundred proposals from film and cultural studies scholars around the world, many of whom, it turns out, currently teach James Bond films in university courses across the humanities and social sciences.
I eventually commissioned a small number of these to publish in the new edition of The James Bond Phenomenon. What particularly struck me during this process was the incredibly high level of interest in the Bond film Casino Royale, directed by Martin Campbell.
More importantly, it marks the first major intervention in critical discussions about Bond in the Daniel Craig era — an era that promises to be one of the most significant in the long history of the franchise.
Drawing on current thinking in cultural analy- sis and film theory, the essays offer innovative readings of Casino Royale and its interrelations with the Bond franchise, the culture industry and recent develop- ments in cinema, society and world politics.
Linked by a shared concern for the ways in which Casino Royale revisions , the essays are organised into three interconnected sections.
Although each essay offers its own perspective on Casino Royale, there are nonetheless certain themes and concerns running through the book.
Related to this concern, the essays also keep circling back to certain key elements of the film, many of which have similarly been important topics of discussion for fans and popular commenta- tors alike.

He has, at least, been reinvented in the movies. The essays deal with James Bond and technology. James Bond and women. James Bond and his body, and so on.
You will find many of the essays deep, some are funny, but you will all of them interesting - even if you do not agree with them. There does seem to be a feminist spin on some of them but do not let that scare you off.
The fact that the Cold War is over and James Bond is now an old fashion spy in a new World Order was an interesting point that popped up a few times in the essays.
